Laura Fraembs' Legacy Is One Of Hard Work And Journalistic Integrity

Laura Fraembs wasn’t well-known to the general public outside of local media circles. She wasn’t on TV, or radio, and her picture rarely appeared in the newspapers for which she’d worked since 1981, The Dispatch and Rock Island Argus, and then the Quad City Times. In fact, she hated attention and shied away from the spotlight. But Fraembs’ legacy of integrity and veracity, absolutely spartan work ethic, and dedication to the principles of journalism, made her a true star of local media and an irreplaceable part of the newspapers. I was very sad to hear about her passing... Read More

Quad-Cities Entertainment Scene Keeps Faith Through Tough Times

“I don’t know what I’m going to do.” His voice, usually brash and loud, is quiet and cracked. “I mean, I’m depressed. Obviously, it sucks, because the money is a big thing. It’s not just me playing out. My wife is a waitress and bartender, and I’m a bartender a couple nights a week. That’s just extra. But we need it.” They have a couple of kids. They have five jobs between them. Or, well, they used to. Now they have one. His. His “day job,” he used to call it. Now it’s their only lifeline to an income that was way too small for them all to live on, but which now has to... Read More

Davenport's German American Heritage Center Down Through April 16

The German American Heritage Center is shutting down through April 16, extending their closure as per the recommendation of the governor. The museum released the following statement today: The GAHC wants to do our part in “flattening the curve” to help stop the spread of Coronavirus. We will extend our closures to April 16, as recommended by Governor Reynolds. But we want to let you know our staff is doing well, working from home and checking on our beautiful property daily. We hope you are all doing well too and we want to let you know about a few things we are working on. We can’t... Read More

Dance Like Nobody's Watching, Because They Aren't, With DJ Shane Brown's New Mix

Miss getting out on the dance floors at clubs? DJ Shane Brown, the man behind the boards at Billy Bob’s in the Rock Island District, as well as the former DJ for such hot spots as 2nd Avenue and the Stockade in the Village, has come up with a new mix for you to blast in the glorious realm of your own social distancing spot. Shane dropped the new mix this evening, which you can check out here, along with the following note, on his Facebook: “So here’s what I’ve been up to in the basement the past couple of days. This is, without doubt, the most ridiculous, silly, stupid mix... Read More

The Cruelest Cut: Chris Schlichting Meet, Greet, Autograph And Optional Worship Meetup Axed

Sometimes life really, really isn’t fair. According to a post on Facebook, or, as Joe Biden calls it, “you know… that thing… that one thing with the people,” the Official Chris Schlichting Meet, Greet, Autograph And Optional Worship Session originally slated for March 28 at Buffalo Wild Wings, has been — are you sitting down, because you should be — canceled. That’s right. First Uncle Rico’s planned appearance where he was going to throw a football not just over the Mississippi, but over the hill in Rock Island to an NFL scout standing in the... Read More

Mourning The Loss Of A Quad-Cities Theatrical Giant

Mourning The Loss Of A Quad-Cities Theatrical Giant

T.S. Eliot had it all wrong. In “The Waste Land,” the poet wrote “April is the cruelest month.” Well, five days before we can kick it into the dustbin of history, it’s safe to say that dishonor now belongs to March. At least March 2020, which has seen one bone-crushing loss after another for many around the world, me especially. Just one of the latest is from our beloved Quad-Cities theater community – of which I’ve been honored to share as longtime arts reporter for the Dispatch/Argus (and later Quad City Times), as well as piano accompanist and occasional stage performer. The singular... Read More

New Online Support Group Offers Help, Solace In Time Of Crisis

Facebook is intrinsically its own support group, albeit without donuts and coffee. Users routinely share (maybe too much) every aspect of their lives, and their friends respond in kind, with support, suggestions, challenge, or argument. Katie Young of Coal Valley — a married, homeschooling mom who’s already very busy juggling her nine kids — recently saw the need for another  group within Facebook, so she formed the QCA Love Thy Neighbor Coronavirus Support Group, to help others navigate these treacherous, uncharted waters in a surreal sea. Young, who’s homeschooled... Read More

One Human Family QCA Makes Inclusive Statement On Covid-19

With the entire world in crisis over the COVID-19 pandemic, it is natural for people to be filled with anxiety and fear over an uncertain future.  This is not the time for blaming, scapegoating and hate. One Human Family QCA is deeply concerned about the recent rise in the number and intensity of hate statements and acts directed against our Asian neighbors as a result of the current pandemic.  One Human Family QCA is dedicated to our mission of welcoming and protecting “the life, dignity, and human rights of ALL people in all places in our community.”  It is in keeping with that mission... Read More
