New MLK Hawaii Doc to be Previewed on Martin Luther King Day

In September 1959, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., visited Hawaii – shortly after it formally became the 50th state in the Union, and spoke to its leaders. That little-known trip is the subject of a planned documentary and a Facebook Live discussion with its filmmakers on Monday, Martin Luther King Day. The Quad-Cities based Azubuike African American Council for the Arts is hosting the free event Jan. 18 at 6 p.m., where Azubuike executive director (and Rock Island native) Jonathan Burnett will interview his father, Academy Award-winner Charles Burnett, director of the new MLK documentary,... Read More

Davenport Native Co-Writing New Biopic on Late Senator John McCain

Davenport native Mark Salter – the longtime confidant and speechwriter for U.S. Sen. John McCain – is co-writing a film script on the late maverick Senator’s cinematic life. An Assumption High School alum whose father was executive director of Mississippi Valley Fair for decades, Salter is penning the biopic with television producer Craig Turk (“The Good Wife,” “FBI”). The film is being made with support from McCain’s family. His widow, Cindy McCain, will serve as an executive producer. “John’s story is one of incredible heroism, of serving causes greater than his own self-interest,”... Read More

Saturday In The Arts is a comprehensive weekly feature looking at a trend, personality, or major subject involving the Quad-Cities arts and entertainment scene. This past week was an historic one for the nation, as well as for Davenport-based River Music Experience. Five Americans died as a result of the massive Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, as pro-Trump insurrectionists disrupted the certification of the Electoral College presidential results. That same Wednesday, RME postponed the planned celebration of the online Music Lab’s 200th episode that afternoon. The half-hour weekday... Read More

Rock Island's Circa '21 Offering Fantastic Shows To Stream

Circa ’21 Dinner Playhouse, Rock Island, has only been open for two months since March 14, yet it has creatively, persistently found alternate ways to offer local entertainment for people like me who are desperate for it. Far from a luxury or a frill that can be easily excised, arts and culture have proven to be a vital lifeline during the devastating Covid-19 pandemic. As I’ve said before, the arts – at any time – help define who we are; they tell the story of us through a staggeringly diverse number of forms and genres. They lift us up, comfort us, inspire us, express what we may not... Read More
