New Holiday Musical DECK THE HALLS Debuts December 9

DECK THE HALLS is a fast paced, family friendly holiday musical featuring such popular hits as Jingle Bells, Silent Night, We Wish You A Merry Christmas, a new version of O’ Little Town of Bethlehem and much more! “The show is all fun and fluff and is the perfect getaway from the outside world,” Mockingbird... Read More

REVIEW: Fun, Fantastic ‘Rocky Horror’ Is A Must-See At Rock Island Speakeasy

REVIEW: Fun, Fantastic 'Rocky Horror' Is A Must-See At Rock Island Speakeasy

The Rock Island Speakeasy’s latest incarnation of “Rocky Horror” to slink out of the lascivious basement of ill repute is an absolute must-see, a tongue in cheek, tongues in cheeks, ribald riot. Driven in particular by the wonderfully smarmy performance of narrator Doug “Dougie” Kutzli, the powerful and sexy belt of Kira Rangel as Janet, and the marvelously campy Anthony Hendricks as Frank N Furter, it’s an absolute blast, one of the most fun and funny “Rocky’s” I’ve ever seen — and I’ve seen quite a few. I’ve probably... Read More

REVIEW: Thought-Provoking New “Enemy” a Friend to Quad-Cities Theater at Mockingbird

REVIEW: Thought-Provoking New “Enemy” a Friend to Quad-Cities Theater at Mockingbird

When I heard that the prolific, amazing Alex Richardson was updating the 1882 Henrik Ibsen play “An Enemy of the People” to a tighter, slimmer, modern version – addressing science, disease, truth, corruption, adultery and journalism – I briefly wondered if there would be a spin on one of Donald Trump’s endlessly repeated lies, the press as the real enemy of the people. That phrase is surprisingly not uttered in the utterly absorbing, thought-provoking “Enemy of the People” at the new Mockingbird on Main in downtown Davenport, but Richardson has made the taut drama (with good doses... Read More

Mockingbird in Davenport Returns With Modern Spin on Ibsen’s “Enemy”

Mockingbird in Davenport Returns With Modern Spin on Ibsen’s “Enemy”

For the second fully staged production at Mockingbird on Main, 320 N. Main St., Davenport, Q-C playwright Alexander Richardson has taken a sprawling 19th-century play by Henrik Ibsen, slimmed it down and modernized it. The 27-year-old East Moliner – who’s been writing plays for almost a decade – slashed the 1882 “An Enemy of the People” from five acts and 30 characters (stretched across three hours), to just five characters and one act, across about 80 minutes. In the story, a doctor realizes that the new expansion for his town’s factory is releasing toxins into the town’s... Read More

Rock Island’s Circa ’21 Delivers Nostalgic, Heartwarming “Big Rock Candy Mountain”

Rock Island's Circa '21 Delivers Nostalgic, Heartwarming “Big Rock Candy Mountain”

At one point in the original bluegrass musical “Big Rock Candy Mountain,”the witchy, bitchy character Velda decries the Depression-era theater in which the story takes place as “frivolous nonsense.” Well, in the midst of what seems like a greater 21st-century Depression (see: Covid, unemployment, racial injustice, political division and endless quarantine), I think a little mindless, frivolous nonsense is just what we need right now. Filmed recently at the Circa ’21 Speakeasy (featuring eight mask-less cast members), the 2014 musical – affectionately written and directed by Tristan... Read More
