Bent River’s Raspberry Brings Summer To Fruition

Well, from the looks of things, between the stifling humidity, the oppressive sun between monsoons, and the constant harassment of gnats as persistent and unwelcome as guys hitting on newly single women on social media, summer seems to have finally kayaked into the Quad-Cities. And with that new season comes a desperate need for a beverage, known to those over 21 (and ONLY those over 21, of course) as “a beer,” to satisfy the full summer cravings of escape, levity and the blessed sainthood of responsible inebriation. Local brew pubs have, generously, proven up to this crucial task on the annual.... Read More

Honest Abe! Area Lemon Bread Looks Remarkably Like President Lincoln

BREAKING NEWS: Four score and seven scones ago… an area breakfast consumer’s lemon poppy seed loaf has been discovered to look remarkably like the 16th president of the United States, Abraham Lincoln. Honest! The sweet treat, emancipating one fortunate breakfast seeker from hunger this morning, was spared mid-nosh by the imbiber, who asked to remain anonymous for fear of enormous jealousy on the part of anyone whose breakfast did not resemble one of the greatest leaders this country has ever known. “It’s a good thing,” the unidentified area man said, “I was... Read More

Marv Out Of Surgery, GoFundMe Still Open For Help

Marvin Franzen, the amicable denim-clad driver of the tractor that shuttles folks to shows at Codfish Hollow Barnstormers, is out of surgery and on the healing path after a horrible accident August 10 when his tractor flipped, breaking two arms and his pelvis. However, medical costs are skyrocketing, and there’s been a GoFundMe set up to help with expenses. Codfish Hollow updated his condition with a post today: “Marvin is out of recovery and in his room. This was a very big surgery and the next 24-48 hours are critical due to a large skin graft which his body needs to accept. Please keep the... Read More

QC Uncut – Peter "Catfish Guy" Robinson

In spring 2019, Peter Robinson was photographed carrying a gigantic catfish across an intersection in downtown Davenport. We at QuadCities.com picked up that picture and turned it into a series of memes that went viral across the internet, spawning more memes that likewise went viral, and turned “catfish guy” into a web sensation that popped up in webcasts and news as far off as Australia. At the time, Robinson was homeless and unemployed, had been in trouble with the law, and was looking to put his life back together. When I interviewed him in the spring for this podcast, he was optimistic... Read More

Take a Trip to Paradise at Zeke’s Island Café

Take a Trip to Paradise at Zeke’s Island Café

Just off the foreboding paths of Harrison Street, in the wild jungles of a college-student populated strip, and in the midst of Duck Creek, marked only by a scruffy, makeshift signpost, lies a slice of the Caribbean right here in the Quad-Cities – Zeke’s Island Café. The tropical-themed restaurants have grown like tropical forestry since opening up five years ago in their original Kimberly Road location (now closed), before spreading to the two new locales like palm trees in the rainy season. “It’s pretty cool, I look at how things have grown and I’m like, ‘wow,’” said chef Jason... Read More
