Darren and Dave Returning To Quad-Cities Airwaves With Planet 93.9

April 22nd, 2020
Darren and Dave Returning To Quad-Cities Airwaves With Planet 93.9

The Planet is returning to local airwaves — along with one of the original voices of its galaxy. Dave Levora and Darren Pitra will return to the morning radio airwaves 5:30 to 10 a.m. Thursday on 93.9 FM with a new alternative rock format replacing that station’s eclectic Jack format. The alt rock playlist will echo that of Planet 93.5, the popular station that drew strong numbers during the alternative rock-ruled ’90s. Levora was recently fired from his gig as morning guy at WOC-AM, Pitra had been a free agent since being let go from Townsquare Media in 2016. Levora worked for... Read More

Former 97X DJ Steve "Race Man" Donovan Passes Away

The race man has roared off into that rock ‘n’ roll mansion in the sky. Steve “Race Man” Donovan, who was a steadfast figure behind-the-scenes and in front of the microphone for a variety of Quad-Cities radio stations, has passed away, according to several social media posts from former colleagues. Donovan, 68, had been battling cancer. Since his retirement from Quad-Cities radio, he’d been living in Elkhart, Indiana. A graduate of Vincennes University, Donovan was best known for his work on 97X and his local show covering the national and area racing scenes. His distinctive... Read More

WOC Could Be A Ratings Giant If They Go For Bigger ‘Fish’

WOC Could Be A Ratings Giant If They Go For Bigger ‘Fish’

When’s the last time you listened to WOC? How old are you? If you’re somewhere under the age of 65, you probably couldn’t remember your answer to that first question. And if you’re somewhere over the age of 65, you probably couldn’t remember either, only for a different reason. I keed! I keed! In all seriousness though, the audience for local talk radio has been growing older and older over the decades. Most of the shows appeal to a decidedly conservative audience and the demographic for those kinds of shows skews older, and not just in radio. Median age of a Fox News prime time viewer?... Read More

Drive To Get Radio Personalities Back Was Worth A Shot, But It’s Not Happening

Drive To Get Radio Personalities Back Was Worth A Shot, But It’s Not Happening

It was worth a shot. But you can stop calling and e-mailing the stations. It ain’t happening. When it was announced first here on QuadCities.com that a number of on- and off-air personnel were let go from local I Heart Radio stations, including WOC’s Jim Fisher and Dave Levora, Debbie McFadden of Mix 96 and Q106, Todd Alan of KISS-FM and Ron Evans of Mix 96, fans of those shows were understandably upset. When it was learned that, a day later, two shows and six jobs had been restored to Des Moines sports talk station KXnO, due to, as they put it “overwhelming fan outcry,” there was some... Read More

WOC’s Jim Fisher Deserved A Better Farewell

WOC’s Jim Fisher Deserved A Better Farewell

I was never a big fan of Jim Fisher’s show. I know him personally, but not very well. I was a guest on his show a handful of times (where we would often disagree, on live radio), and when we ran into each other in social situations, we could get along fine as long as we avoided any hot button topics. As a person, a human being, I got along with him alright because we had a fairly superficial small talky interaction. But I can’t say I was ever a fan of his show. It’s not just that Jim and I often disagreed on topics and politics, it’s that the show, especially in the last decade, went off... Read More

Jim Fisher Let Go After 40 Years At WOC-AM

After 60 years in broadcasting, 40 in the Quad-Cities, longtime afternoon radio host Jim Fisher has been let go by WOC-AM1420, according to various posts on social media, including one by Fisher’s longtime friend and producer Dan Kennedy. WOC has yet to make a formal announcement and neither has Fisher, but social media was buzzing with the news today, and Fisher’s friend and former program director at WOC, Dan Kennedy, posted the following on his Facebook page today: “Sorry to hear about my friends at IHeart Radio. Great people let go today including the legendary Jim Fisher. You all made... Read More
