Illinois is celebrating high times in regard to its recreational marijuana sales.

High Times For Illinois As State Passes $1 Billion In Pot Sales For 2020It was a year ago, Jan. 1, 2020, when the state officially opened its first legal marijuana dispensaries, and there’s been plenty of green brought in by the green.

According to data released Monday by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, Illinois recreational marijuana sales topped $1 billion for the year. That total was lit up by sales hitting a new monthly high in December, and includes $331 million in medical marijuana sales and over $670 million in recreational sales.

The state’s 80 adult-use dispensaries experienced a 15 percent jump in the last month of the year, bowling up nearly $87 million in recreational weed sales last month, up from $75.2 million in November, according to the data.

More than a quarter of the sales were to out-of-state patrons (hello, Iowa, is Dave there?)

The numbers are expected to leap even higher in 2021, as Illinois is looking to grant licenses to at least 75 new dispensaries throughout the state.
