Illinois Congressman Sorensen’s Statement on Safety Concerns Surrounding DC Air Collision

Congressman Eric Sorensen (IL-17) issued the following statement in response to safety concerns following the tragic mid-air collision near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport:

“As our country grapples with the aftermath of this week’s tragic mid-air collision near Reagan National Airport, my heart remains focused on the families who are dealing with grief. I am grateful to the first responders for their heroic efforts in such difficult conditions.

As someone who regularly commutes to and from Washington, I am deeply concerned about the safety of the airspace.

While we search for specific answers, I am concerned by early reports that the control tower staffing at the time of the incident was ‘not normal,’ according to a preliminary FAA review. It is critical we conduct a thorough independent investigation to provide answers and to ensure the safety of all travelers.

At the same time, I call on all my colleagues in Congress to provide the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) with the funding and resources needed to perform their vital roles and ensure safety. These agencies are on the front lines of ensuring safe air travel, investigating accidents, and maintaining the standards that protect passengers and crews. Without the necessary support, we run the risk of future tragedies.

I’m awaiting a full report from the FAA and am seeking direct assurances that flights into and out of DCA meet the highest safety standards and that necessary steps are being taken to prevent another tragedy. Until those assurances are provided to me, I will be commuting to the nation’s capital through nearby Washington-Dulles. We must ensure the highest level of safety for every civilian flying, as well as every service member in the skies. We must demand real solutions, and we need them as soon as possible.”
