Davenport’s team was eliminated Sunday from the Babe Ruth World Series after a fourth tough loss, but its team can hold its head high after another terrific effort, perhaps their best yet of the competition.

The team is composed of Manager Jason Gillaspie, Coach Larry Cato, Coach Tony Losasso and players Cody Depardo, Sam Wellman, Jacob Struss, Luke Loving, Lucas Gross, Andrew Hutchcroft, Cade Amato, Nate Canfield, Jake Mahon, Alex Jaros, Owen Steiger, Jackson Vogel, Kieren Obrien and Sam Fleming.

Day four of the thirteen year old Ottumwa Babe Ruth World Series started smoothly but was interrupted by rain.
Spokane and Davenport started out in a scoreless tie after three innings and then a 20 minute relay delay halted the game.

After the rain delay, defense continued to reign ending several scoring threats from either team.

In the bottom of the fourth, two straight walks led to a scoring threat for Davenport. Spokane pitcher Andrew Monson forced a 5-3 double play to escape the inning.

In the next inning, Jake Mahon used a single to get on base and after Owen Steiger got on after being hit by a pitch, Mahon stole third. Spokane got a pop fly for the first out and then David Dawson came in to pitch. He picked up a strikeout and a ground ball to get out of the inning.

More defense in the top of the seventh. Spokane had Ben Hadley on second with Ricco Longo to bat. He hit a line out to shortstop Sam Wellman who made the catch and then tossed the ball to second for the double play to end the inning.

Spokane kept the pressure on in the top of the eighth inning. Keiran O’Brien walked the first two batters and then intentionally walked David Dawson to load the bases. With one out, Ethan Morinti then hit a high fly ball to right fielder Jackson Vogel, he made the catch and then delivered a high arching throw to home to get out Laken Young at home who attempted to tag up and score.

The Expos finally got on the board in the top of the ninth. With one out, Turk Riggan stood on third and Andrew Monson came to bat. Monson hit a single to right field that just stayed fair to deliver the first run of the day.

Davenport then went down in order in the bottom of the ninth to end the game.

Monson earned the Ron Tellefsen player of the game honors for his game winning RBI and his 4 1/3 innings pitched allowing 1 hit with 2 strikeouts. Davenport’s Jacob Struss was their player of the game pitching 7 scoreless innings with three strikeouts.

Spokane(2-1) faces Meridian(1-2) tomorrow at 2:30pm. Davenport(0-4) has finished pool play.
