Don’t Condemn Quad City Arts For One Man’s Actions
Don’t throw the arts organization out with the (alleged) pedophile.
In recent days, the arrest of a man for having child sex abuse material has been blasted across local media, along with his previous designation as interim director of Quad City Arts.
If the man is guilty of these crimes, he certainly deserves the condemnation.
However, it’s unfair that people are likewise levying that condemnation on Quad City Arts, where he was the interim director for a short time.
Quad City Arts had no knowledge of this man’s activities.
It in no way condoned those activities.
And once the man was arrested, they condemned those activities.
There’s no need for them to be dragged through the mud, as they have been in the comments sections of news stories on this matter.
For decades, Quad City Arts has done a lot of magnificent things for this community and hundreds of people with good intentions and character have been a part of that.
The law of averages alone would suggest that there had to have been a few jerks among hundreds of people, and this latest guy charged with being a pedo certainly fits that.
But people criticizing QCA or painting it with a negative brush need to get a grip. This isn’t the Catholic Church or extremist Islam where they’ve got institutionalized or heavily covered-up pedophilia, it’s a rare outlier where an (alleged) scumbag just happened to be working for an arts organization, just like there are scumbags working for a myriad of other organizations as well.
As far as I can ascertain from people I’ve talked to, people at QCA did not know about this guy’s alleged outside activities, nor did they take place within the confines of programming at QCA.
As such, Quad City Arts is not to blame here. The guy who allegedly did these things is to blame.
Let’s keep that in mind, before maligning the good name and reputation of an arts organization that has done a lot of great things and been a positive force in this community.
