Help Out A Girl Who Makes The Quad Cities More Magical

December 7th, 2018

Nikki Gillette has always struck me as someone puzzlingly uncertain as to just how amazing she is. Gillette has been a regular on the performing arts scene in the Quad Cities for a while, as a standup comedian, musician, burlesque performer and actress. She teaches art to kids at Blue Grass Elementary, manages the traveling comedy troupe Show Us Your Pokeballs, models, haunts and does makeup at Terror at Skellington Manor, and is involved with other local groups such as Moonshine Misfits Burlesque and Open Source Improv. She’s also a columnist for this website. She’s smart, funny, beautiful... Read More

November 22nd, 2016

You probably already knew this already, but just in case you aren’t feeling the psychic powers at this moment, you should know that the Q-C Psychic And Paranormal Expo brought a ton of fun and good vibes to the i-wireless center in Moline over the weekend. The two-day event, the fourth annual of its kind, drew over 1,000 people to check out vendors, performers and speakers from throughout the country. Skellington Manor’s Haunted ‘Asylum’ Is Hellishly Fun

October 21st, 2016

The parking lot was packed and the streets were lined with cars. Spooky places spook me. Skellington Manor in Rock Island has their Asylum this year and it is a terrifying place to be this time of year. Even standing in line for The Asylum haunt can be scary!  Upon entry, one can feel the vibes of Halloween running madly through the air. They handed me an old address stamp card made of metal and sent me into the parlor. I remember thinking to myself, “This is alright.” Then some crazy sound shot off from behind me and scared me half to death! At that point, I just said a prayer for... Read More

Chics with Bics: A Fun Girls’ Night Out, In Pajamas Or Not

September 14th, 2016

Remember when you’d spend your weekends hanging out with your best friends, staying up all night, eating tons of junk food, and watching your favorite movies in your super comfy pajamas? Well, four Iowa comedians are recapturing that nostalgia this Saturday, and turning the volume up to eleven. Chics with Bics, a brand new comedy show that encompasses stand up, improv, and sketch will be hosting a performance at the Blackhawk Room next to the Moline Bierstube on Saturday, Sept. 17, at 8 p.m. The show is the brainchild of stand up comedian and improvisor Heather Nobiling, who sought to give the... Read More

Nikki Quests To Catch ‘Em All In Pokemon Go

August 24th, 2016

It’s a warm, slightly overcast day at 3 p.m. in July. As I’m walking circles around Vanderveer Park, I pause every moments to swipe my phone and pick up the items as they appear in bubbles on my screen. Those items? Three pokeballs, a potion, and a raspberry. And on I go with my afternoon walk. I’m far from alone this day, as the park is filled with hundreds of people, all of them staring at their phones, befriending each other, comparing rosters, fighting over gyms, and coming up with creative strings of swear words to express their disdain for the fickle servers. There’s a few teens,... Read More

So, You Want to Write a Web Series… (A Slightly Fictionalized Memoir About the Making of “Against the Odds”)

July 15th, 2016

May 2015 “Hey, that’s me!”  I say it aloud while staring at my phone in the coffee shop.  The people at the next table look at me as if I spilled soup down my shirt.  After cleaning myself up (I have, in fact, spilled soup down my shirt), I read the Facebook status again.  Josh Kahn (The Ghost of Vaudeville, Bottoms-Up Burlesque, Blacklist) is asking his Facebook friends if anyone knows of anyone with screenwriting experience. “Hey, that’s me!” is a slight exaggeration.  I had one co-written play produced and have various unproduced ventures – four episodes of a co-written 1930s... Read More
