Western Illinois Celebrates National Volunteer Week April 21-24

Western Illinois University is celebrating National Volunteer Week Monday, April 21 to Thursday, April 24. The Office of Student Engagement – Volunteer Programs and Western’s All Volunteer Effort (WAVE) are partnering together to provide WIU student volunteers opportunities to participate in giving back to their community.

National Volunteer Week is a time to celebrate and create an impact within the community. This year, the volunteer opportunities will include:

Monday, April 21, 11 a.m.- 3 p.m. – Kinder Monday
Where: University Union.
What: Making and handing out cotton candy with motivational messages.

Monday, April 21, 2-5 p.m. – Animal Shelter / Volunteer Opportunity
Where: 101 E. Tower Rd, Macomb, IL 61455.
What: Walk dogs and “hang out/play” with the dogs in their outside area. Also, be in the cat’s area to “hang out/play” with them. This helps the animals relieve stress and feel appreciated.

Tuesday, April 22, 1-5 p.m. – Good Food Pantry / Volunteer Opportunity
Where: 133 W Jackson St, Macomb, IL 61455.
What: Assisting shoppers with grocery shopping, taking goods to cars and stocking shelves.

Tuesday, April 22, 4-6 p.m. -Street Clean Up / Volunteer Opportunity
Where: 307 W University Dr, Macomb, IL 61455.
What: Volunteers will walk up and down Lafayette Street with garbage bags and the proper protective gear (gloves and vest) collecting trash.

Wednesday, April 23, 2-4 p.m. – Horn Field Campus / Volunteer Opportunity
Where: 985 China Rd, Macomb, IL 61455.
What: Outdoor tasks range from clearing the landscape and brush to mulching trails. Indoor tasks typically involve giving the cabins and lodge a good cleaning so they sparkle for guests.

Wednesday, April 23, 6-9 p.m. – BINGO & Canned Food Drive with UUB
Where: University Union, Grand Ballroom.
What: Collect canned food donations for WAVE & UUB. Also, join for bingo afterward.

Thursday, April 24, 11 a.m.-3 p.m. – Prairie Land Conservancy / Volunteer Opportunity
Where: Wigwam Hollow Bird Sanctuary at 1900 Wigwam Hollow Road, Macomb, IL 61455.
What: Invasive species removal with hand tools to improve wildlife habitat and biodiversity at the bird sanctuary.
