Congresswoman Cheri Bustos (IL-17) released the following statement on Majority Leader Steny Hoyer’s announcement that he will not seek a leadership position in the 118th Congress.

“In 1981 as a student at the University of Maryland, I volunteered on a campaign to elect a new Congressional candidate named Steny Hoyer. I joined hoping to get great experience, but I didn’t realize that I would leave with a lifelong mentor and friend.

“A public servant who has always put the people first, Majority Leader Hoyer would later join me in many visits to Illinois. During every visit, he listened to the constituents and community leaders I represent and took their messages back to Washington with him. These were just a few moments among so many that illustrate his dedication to building a greater America. A steadfast advocate for America’s working families, our Congress and our country are both better because of Steny Hoyer.”
