MACOMB, IL — The Gwendolyn Brooks Cultural Center (GBCC) at Western Illinois University is accepting applications for its annual Black Alumni Scholarship.

Western Illinois University's GBCC Accepting Applications for Black Alumni Scholarship“Scholarships provide an opportunity for many students to earn an education,” said Brandon Smith, a graduate student with the GBCC. “Without assistance from an outside source, most students will have trouble paying for their degrees. Scholarships help many students have the same educational opportunity as everyone else.”

An applicant’s WIU alumni or non-alumni heritage is not part of the selection process.

“Speaking on behalf of the staff of the Gwendolyn Brooks Cultural Center, and taking the liberty to speak for the recipients of the award, I say to the Black Alumni Committee, thank you. Your generosity makes a difference in the lives of WIU students and is deeply appreciated,” said Carl Ervin, program coordinator at WIU’s Multicultural Center.

The GBCC is one of four centers within the Multicultural Center which also houses Casa Latina Cultural Center, LGBT*QA Resource Center and the Women’s Center.
