OTTUMWA – The Babe Ruth World Series got underway in Ottumwa, Iowa Wednesday afternoon, with a little light-hearted fun.

Players from all ten teams took the field for the skills competition.

Spokane Washington had the best showing, winning two events. The Pacific Northwest Champs won the Turn Two competition as the fastest team to turn three sets of double plays. Spokane’s David Dawson won the Home Run Derby, hitting two dingers.

Waterford Connecticut’s Connor Podeszwa won the Bean Babe competition, awarded to the player that scored the most points throwing at a home plate target. Eau Claire, Wisconsin won the team relay race around the bases.

Tournament play gets underway today. With eight of the 10 teams taking the field.

At 2:30 Meridian Mississippi takes on Pearl City, Hawaii, and Eau Claire plays Waterford.

In the late games, host Ottumwa plays West Fargo, North Dakota and Davenport, Iowa takes on Sarasota, Florida.

Skill Competition Winners

Turn Two competition, Spokane Washington in 34.31 – fastest team to complete three sets of double plays

Bean Babe competition – Connor Podeszwa of Waterford Connecticut 23 points – player that gets the most points by throwing at the target at home plate.

Relay Race – Eau Claire Wisconsin 15.36 – fastest average time for a relay team around the bases

Home Run Derby – David Dawson Spokane Washington – won with 11 points in hit off (2 home runs)
