Summer reading and events at the Rock Island Public Library continue June 7 through 12 with free events for children, teens, and adults, including take-home kits for kids, a non-fiction book club for adults, and Summer2Go activities around library bookmobile stops.

Children and Family Events this week:

  • Children’s Bead Kit, available starting Monday, June 7 at Downtown, Southwest, and Mobile Libraries while supplies last. One kit per child, no registration required.
  • Facebook Live Storytime: Tuesday at 10:30 am with Miss Ranell. Stories and more for ages five and under.
  • Summer2Go with Library2Go: Monday at Blackhawk Park (2:30 to 3:30 pm), Tuesday at Rauch Family Park (10 am to 11:30) and at Longview Park (2:30 to 3:30pm) and Thursday at Centennial Shelter Park off Big Island Road (2:30 to 3:30 pm.) Children’s Librarians bring a story and activity to do at the park around the bookmobile. This week’s event is a Giant Connect 4 game.
  • Children’s Facebook Live Book Talk: Friday at 10:30 am. Weekly reading suggestions for ages 7 to 12, and a sneak peek at new books in the library.
  • Library At the Movies, Rock Island Library staff offer a free activity before the Parks Department movie, which starts at dusk on June 12 at Martin Luther King park, Rock Island.

Adults and Teen events this week:

  • Registration opens for a Teen and Adult Natural Dyes Kit at 9 am June 7. One kit per household. Kit distribution starts June 21.
  • Facebook Live Teen Book Talk: Tuesday at 3:45 with Emily. Librarian book suggestions for young adult fiction and non-fiction.
  • Non-Fiction Summer Book Club: Meet library staff at 6pm on June 10 in Longview Park to discuss “The Devil in the White City,” by Erik Larson. Participants should bring a chair. If adverse weather is expected, the event moves online.
  • Online lecture, Chemical Warfare in World War 1, 6 pm on June 9, from Army Sustainment Command historian. Register to receive the online meeting link.

The library’s Reading Colors Your World summer reading challenges run from now through July 31. The goal-based reading reward programs encourage adults, children and teens to catch up on reading for fun, reduce summer learning loss, and connect to a lifelong pastime.
