BREAKING: Illinois Covid Cases UP 70 PERCENT; More Restrictions On The Way?

Illinois covid numbers have surged more than 70 percent over the past three weeks.

IDPH numbers released today show the state is averaging 3,560 new cases of COVID per day over the last week. That is 72% more than the 2,069 new cases that the state was seeing each day on Oct. 27.

Hospitalizations are also rising quickly statewide, with 1,627 patients currently hospitalized with covid statewide, an increase of 36 percent in the last three weeks. There are currently 325 COVID patients in intensive care unit beds across the state.

On the positive side of things, at least the numbers are much better than last fall’s surge, which saw Illinois averaging 12,384 new cases a day in mid-November 2020.

Gov. JB Pritzker had been waffling on lifting the mask mandate before the holidays, and now, IDPH Director Ngozi Ezike said it’s probably not going to happen.

“As we’ve moved indoors, we haven’t maybe taken our masks indoors with us. So a lot of unmasked indoor gatherings are likely part of the problem,” Ezike said. “Of course, COVID is so complicated. It’s been throwing us curveball after curveball.”

Illinois is still under a statewide mask mandate, and a majority of people are vaccinated, but hospitalizations due to covid continue to flare up as the winter approaches.

In a press conference today, Chicago Department of Public Health Commissioner Dr. Allison Arwady didn’t offer any insight on whether or not there would be further mitigations, but speculated that, due of the large number of vaccinated people in Illinois, severe lockdowns like last fall would probably not happen.

“Unvaccinated Chicagoans of all ages are more likely to be hospitalized,” she said. “I’m certainly not expecting to see the major lockdowns like we saw early on.”

Locally, numbers are all on the rise.

The Rock Island County Health Department reports three COVID-19 deaths today: a man in his 90s who had been hospitalized; a man in his 70s who had been hospitalized; and a man in his 70s who had been living in a long-term-care facility.
The total number of deaths is now 382.
“We send our sincere sympathies to their loved ones,” said Janet Hill, chief operating officer and public information officer of the Rock Island County Health Department.
The health department also reports 142 cases of COVID-19 since the last report on Wednesday. The total number of cases is 19,843. Currently, 19 patients are hospitalized in the county with the virus. The average age of newly infected patients is 33.
