Western Illinois University International Student Closet Seeking Donations for Fall Semester

Western Illinois University’s International Student Closet is preparing for the Fall 2022 semester by collecting personal and household items. The closet is located at the St. Francis of Assisi Newman Center, 1404 W. University Dr., which is where donations can be dropped off. If the center is not open, items can be left inside the first set of doors. Western Illinois DREAMer Scholarship Fund Drive Underway

MACOMB/MOLINE, IL – Thanks to the generosity of numerous donors, the Western Illinois University DREAMer Scholarship Fund awarded more than $23,000 to four “DREAMers” during the 2021-2022 academic year. Political Science Professor Julia Albarracin-Green, who established the WIU DREAMer Scholarship Fund, hopes to do the same for the 2022-2023 academic year. According to the Migration Policy Institute, more than 33,700 individuals considered Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) reside in Illinois. The memory of Macomb native and Civil Rights activist, the late Rev. Dr. C.T. Vivian, is being celebrated one brush stroke at a time as Western Illinois University Art Professor Emeritus Michael Mahoney works to complete a 70-foot public mural at the intersection of Macomb’s North Randolph and East Carroll streets. The mural, which will be unveiled at a public ceremony Saturday, July 30, depicts accomplishments during the pastor’s life. Western Illinois University is partnering with city officials to host a community walk through of off-campus housing from 1:30-6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 16. The event is an opportunity for University staff and law enforcement and city staff and community partners to have a positive touchpoint and to welcome new student residents before the upcoming academic year. Western’s Office of Public Safety (OPS), the Macomb Police Department (MPD) and Carthage Police Department will hold a bicycle auction, conducted by Lowderman Auction Company, beginning at 5-5:30 p.m. (registration), 5:30 p.m. (auction) Friday, Aug. 5 at the University Services Building on West University Drive. The bikes will be on display between 4-4:30 p.m. Approximately 150 bicycles, and a variety of unclaimed lost and found items (e.g. clothing, laptops, etc.), will be auctioned to the highest bidders. Western Illinois University will pay tribute to members of the armed forces, along with two of its own fallen soldiers, Capt. Derek Dobogai and Lt. Col. Robert Baldwin, Saturday, Oct. 8 as part of the 11th annual Fallen Soldiers 5K Run/Walk. The event will begin with a ceremony at 8:30 a.m. in the Donald S. Spencer Student Recreation Center, with the race beginning at 9 a.m. in front of Western Hall on University Drive. Western Illinois University Computer Science graduate student Gbubemi Tuoyo saw a hole in the marketplace and has developed an app for his WIU peers, Spotlight Junkie, to buy, sell and trade items with other students on the WIU campus.
