'Valor And Victory Gardens' WW II Exhibit Open At German American Heritage Center

Members of the German American Heritage Center & Museum are invited to join the German American Heritage Center in Davenport on Sunday, September 27th at 2pm for a special first look at our newest exhibit, “Valor & Victory Gardens: WWII in the Hawkeye State.” The event will begin with a presentation by S. Patrick Allie, Director of the Rock Island Arsenal Museum. Following the presentation, members are invited to enjoy refreshments from the Swiss Baker and view the exhibit. World War II in Iowa Explored in New Exhibit At Davenport's German American Heritage Museum

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II, as Japan unconditionally surrendered to the Allies on Aug. 14, 1945. To commemorate the end of the global conflict (which killed 416,800 U.S. military), the German American Heritage Center in Davenport has a new exhibit – “Valor & Victory Gardens: WWII in the Hawkeye State.” It explores how the war impacted Iowa. With this exhibit, the museum remembers and commemorates the period through local headlines, personal letters, and historic artifacts. Family Museum in Bettendorf Aims to Save $300K, Closes 2 Weeks in August

The Family Museum, 2900 Learning Campus Drive, Bettendorf, will save about $300,000 by closing two weeks in August, furloughing its staff, and leaving nine open jobs unfilled, among other budget cuts. The city-owned museum – which reopened May 22 after closing nine weeks due to Covid-19 — will be closed Aug. 9-23, due to a decrease in attendance and revenue since reopening. Documentary on American Nazi Resistance Coming to German American Heritage Center

The harrowing story of the only American woman to be executed by direct orders of Adolf Hitler will return to Davenport’s German American Heritage Center this Saturday. The 2011 documentary “Wisconsin’s Nazi Resistance: The Mildred Fish Harnack Story,” will be shown at 2 p.m. at the center, at 2nd and Gaines streets. The one-hour doc takes a provocative look at a Milwaukee-born, University of Wisconsin-Madison graduate who became the only American woman ever executed on the direct order of Hitler for her involvement in the Berlin resistance movement during World War II.
