Local students get the chance to play with the Navy Band

The United States Navy Concert Band, which has been entertaining audiences and supporting the Navy with some of the best musicians in the country, played to a full house at Augustana College’s Centennial Hall this weekend. The band has played for a Quad-Cities audience many times, and the college was glad to once again host them for an energetic and high-level performance.

The Navy Band traditionally invites area students to join them in performing John Philip Sousa’s “Washington Post” march at their concerts. This year, 10 lucky students from Quad-Cities area high schools were invited to play.

Directors from each school selected superior players from their bands:

  • Meaghan Glenn, alto saxophone, Moline High School
  • Peyton Hansen, trumpet, Moline High School
  • Katrina Wolf, bassoon, Kewanee High School
  • Ian Aplington, clarinet, Pleasant Valley High School
  • Keshav Wagle, oboe, Pleasant Valley High School
  • Peter Mills, trumpet, Pleasant Valley High School
  • Rebecca Knuth, flute, Rock Island High School
  • Dakota Heffernan, French horn, Rock Island High School
  • Alexandra Axup, euphonium, Rock Island High School
  • Joseph Anderson, alto saxophone, Rock Island High School

Of the students featured in this past weekend’s concert, two have been awarded scholarships to Augustana College. It is possible that scholarship winners Peyton Hansen and Rebecca Knuth will return to the Centennial Hall stage very soon.

This concert is among dozens of performances presented in Centennial Hall each year. Many of these performances are free or have a low cost of admission, providing students and community members access to numerous high-quality performances throughout the year.
