Congratulations to Thurgood Marshall Learning Center for being selected as the School of the Month winner for December. The District F.A.C.E team selects the school of the month based on the work of the building F.A.C.E team as a collaborative unit, building leader support to the overall building F.A.C.E goals, the intentionality of implementing events that include a variety of different process conditions, and the consistency of F.A.C.E events and operations at each site. The board recognized 65 students who have maintained a 3.5 GPA or above for 6 semesters. At the Board of Education meeting on August 10, 65 Rock Island High School seniors were honored as Charles O. Austin Jr. Scholars. The students were presented with certificates of recognition for completing six semesters of study and earning a 3.5 GPA or higher. A Washington Jr. High student got to have her wish come true! Markelah Hicks suffers from diabetes and wanted to meet a princess so the staff at WJHS made it happen! They reached out to Miss Iowa, Alysa Goethe and she stopped by the school. Miss Iowa who also suffers from diabetes shared her story with Health, AVID, and Functional classrooms. Rock Island High School’s Cultural Club got together to have a Thanksgiving Feast. Students brought food from their cultures to share. Some meals included were Baozi from Thailand, Pan Ducles (Mexican desserts), Arabic pickles, curry dishes, and a lot more! Mr. Mwaga also made a Ugali soup from Kenya. De’Viann Titus-Porter, or ‘TP’ to his many friends, is a graduating senior at St. Ambrose University and football player. TP is also a graduate of North High School! Over the past school year, TP served as a mentor at Wilson Elementary School and today the school threw an event called ‘Bee the Difference’ featuring SAU cheerleaders and football players.
