The discussion over mental health challenges can be a difficult one. Admitting concerns can be daunting and treatment options and social stigmas surrounding the issue are often intimidating to those suffering from this disease, as well as those whose lives are touched by those suffering.

The issue of mental health and the facilitation of discussion about its perspectives is the driving force behind the inspirational book “Courage To Rise Above,” by Quad-Cities author Jennifer Sergeant.

jen-sergeantSergeant’s book, which is available at the Davenport Book Rack store as well as online at all retailers, and Sergeant’s online store here, deals with the issue from different perspectives, discussing the roles of traditional medicine, psychological therapy, prescription therapy and attitude and faith in regard to mental health. Through the brisk and lively tome, Sergeant hopes the reader will find the courage to rise above their own difficulties, whether they personally suffer from mental health issues or whether they have someone in their lives who suffers from those issues.

“I wanted to write a book that helped facilitate discussion about mental health, that helped people realize they aren’t alone in their situations and to help de-stigmatize this issue,” Sergeant said. “If even one person is helped by my book, I will consider it a success.”

“Courage To Rise Above” is the debut book from Sergeant. She has been a long-time fixture on the local music and theater scene, leading several award-winning musical acts, releasing a number of CDs and gracing area stages as an actress, singer and bootlegger for Circa ’21.

She is currently working on two other projects, a children’s book and a book about mental health issues from the young adult perspective.

“Courage To Rise Above” is available in bookstores worldwide and online and through Createspace.com. Sergeant will be appearing at various area bookstores to sign her book and discuss its content throughout 2021.
