The Rock Island Library continues an out-of-this world summer by hosting two bands from the United States Naval Station Great Lakes as part of a mid-summer celebration at the Downtown Library, 401 19th Street.

The Library’s Summer Sweets event is Thursday, June 27 from noon to 3:00 pm in the Rock Island Downtown Library parking lot, 401 19th Street.A Summer Sweets Concert Is Coming Your Way

Liberty Call, a four piece jazz combo ensemble, will perform from 12:30 to 1:30 pm. They perform a wide range of musical genres, ranging from traditional New Orleans-style jazz to modern day popular country, rock, jazz and blues.. Under the direction of Unit Leader Musician First Class Jesse Carmona, Liberty Call is the most versatile ensemble within Navy Band Great Lakes, performing at a variety of venues, from outdoor concerts to smaller acoustic venues. Brass Ambassadors, a brass quintet, performs from 2:00 to 3:00 pm. Established in 1982 and comprised of five brass instrumentalists, the Brass Ambassadors have performed throughout the Midwestern United States for military functions, public concerts, recitals, and school clinics. This ensemble performs musical styles such as classical compositions, Dixieland and march arrangements. (Photo attached.)

The U.S. Navy bands are sailing into the Illinois and Iowa Quad Cities as part of Navy Week, the Navy’s premier outreach program.Navy Week is June 24-30 in conjunction with the Quad Cities Air Show, headlined by the Navy’s flight demonstration squadron – the Blue Angels. The week includes more than 75 unique outreach events.

Members of the public are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets and stay for the  shows. Along with the Navy Bands, food trucks from Scratch Cupcakery Curbside and Cool Beanz Coffee will be vending cupcakes and beverages from 12:00 to 3:00 pm. A portion of proceeds benefit the library. Free ice cream treats will be available from Vibrant Credit Union. Other free family activities include chalk art, button-making, NASA sorting games, photo props, and news about new library services. A US Census representative will also be on hand to talk about available job opportunities.

The Summer Sweets event recognizes the half-way point of the library’s summer reading challenges and Universe of Stories events. With one month left before challenges splash down on July 31, there’s still time for all ages to read and win rewards for meeting their summer reading goals. Readers may enter and participate online or by using paper forms.

The library lot will be closed off to hold the event. Public parking is available at surrounding parking lots and on the street. In the event of rain, the bands will perform in the Library Community Room on the second floor.

Summer reading participants may also earn points for the items they check out when they register for the library’s free My Library Rewards incentive program. The new service awards points for checking out items at a Rock Island Library. For more details, visit www.mylibraryrewards.com.
