Delta Kappa Gamma Helps Out Rock Island Children In Need With Free Books

Members of Mu Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma dropped off bags filled with new books to the students of Alyssa Leone’s class at the Rock Island Academy and Amanda Long’s class at Thomas Jefferson. The books selected for the bags feature characters who reflect the diversity of the district’s students. The project was a collaboration of three groups: Mu Chapter DKG (a professional society of women educators), the local chapter of the NAACP, and the Rock Island Jr. Woman’s Club, who sewed and handpainted the bags. Rock Island School Students Stay Engaged With Fun Fall Programs

More than 100 students participated in Spring Forward’s Fall Intersession Camps! The camps were offered to any student in the district in grades 1st through 6th at no cost to them. During the first week of Fall Intersession (Oct. 3-Oct.7), students were able to choose between four fun, hands-on camps. They could learn art with the Figge Art Museum, science and nature with the Putnam Museum and Nahant Marsh Education Center, or Basketball and Swimming with Rock Island Parks & Recreation. This was a great opportunity for students to still be engaged over fall break and have fun doing so!  Read More

Illinois Business Owner Donates Books To Rock Island Students

Tamara Feldman, owner of the Artsy Bookworm book store in Rock Island started the campaign “Planting Books-Seeds 4 a Better Future”. She asked the community to step up and help out local kids. And they delivered! Through the donation campaign, Feldman was able to purchase enough books that every second-grade student would be able to walk away with a book bundle that includes three books. Thanks to a generous donor, Earl Hanson was able to purchase a new playground for its students! On Friday, August 26, Earl Hanson Elementary School hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate its new playground. The PTO (parent-teacher organization) asked the school’s principal what are the school’s needs. She told them a playground, somewhere for the kids to play. The PTO members reached out to some of its community connections and found a donor.
