On a day before record low temperatures were predicted to freeze the Quad-Cities, hundreds of people spent a brrrrr-tiful afternoon celebrating winter’s wiles during the free Icetravaganza at Davenport’s Freight House. Mammoth ice sculptures were sliced and sawed, children frolicked in play areas, little girls smiled at all manner of “Frozen” and princess related items and people enjoyed hot soup and drinks as they perused a plethora of swag in a bustling market atmosphere. There are going to be plenty of treats, tricks, scares and surprises during this year’s Halloween season in the Quad-Cities, and here are some of the events you can check out. Fright Night takes place beginning at 5 p.m. in the District in downtown Rock Island, featuring music, fun activities for kids, crafts and arts, lots of free candy, a costume contest, DJ Jeff James and more. Rock Island Should Have Shopped Local With $15M Walmart Cash

To say Rock Island made a colossal error in wasting $15 million to woo Walmart to 11th Street is a stunning understatement. But what’s perhaps saddest and most pathetic about it is its irony. Rock Island, like thousands of other cities across the country, will, at least once a year, pay lip service and throw promotional money at “small business weeks” and hollow pitches to “shop local.” City officials should’ve heeded their own advice in this matter.
