Find Out The Scandalous Stories About Davenport's Bucktown On Zoom TONIGHT!

Believe it or not, the classic Bucktown building in downtown Davenport was once a pretty wild and rowdy place. You can learn more about it during a new Zoom program taking place at 6 p.m. Monday, called Davenport’s Bucktown in 1903: “Worst Town in America.” A 1903 editorial in the Chicago Record-Herald claimed our very own Davenport swiped New York City’s title as the “Worst Town in America.” Join author Jonathan Turner, our very own arts and entertainment reporter for QuadCities.com, for a look at what earned Bucktown such a dubious honor. Quad-Cities Year In Arts: Reflecting On A Year Like No Other, Personally and in the Arts

Saturday In The Arts is a comprehensive weekly feature looking at a trend, personality, or major subject involving the Quad-Cities arts and entertainment scene. Making it through nearly five months of a paralyzing pandemic was bad enough, but for those of us in Iowa and the Quad-Cities, Aug. 10, 2020 and the days that followed seemed especially cruel. I’ll never forget that Monday afternoon, working on my laptop in the basement, a prisoner in my home trying not to go insane during a crazy year. The power suddenly went out, as a freak inland hurricane (or “derecho” – duh-RAY-cho – as everyone... Read More

Bucktown, MidCoast, Embodied the “Cool, Creative” We Need More Of In The Quad-Cities

Sept. 30, 2016 was one of the best nights of my life. At the Boho Chic Gallery in downtown Davenport’s Bucktown Center for the Arts, I was surrounded by friends, samples of Front Street beer (including its Bucktown Stout), and copies of my first book, “A Brief History of Bucktown: Davenport’s Infamous District Transformed.” It was because of this quirky collection of art galleries and studios – which had a brief, busy, vital life from 2005 to this past March – that I was commissioned in August 2014 by The History Press to write the definitive story of the colorful east end of downtown... Read More
