The Quad Cities area, straddling the Mississippi River on the Iowa-Illinois border, hums to life in the summer, and for 2025, it will be no different, with a full slate of music and sports events.

From its historic role as a center of riverboat trade, the region nowadays attracts visitors to its lively festivals and sports events. With jazz in the streets and thrills on the race tracks, the summer schedule provides a sampling of Midwestern life to travelers looking for it.

Music and General Entertainment

Iowa City’s Iowa Arts Festival, June 6-8, transforms downtown into a lively celebration of music and art. Over 100 artists sell their goods, while stages host local and national musical acts, from jazz to indie rock.

Food is, of course, not left behind, with vendors selling regional delicacies, and kids’ activities keep families entertained. This free festival, a 40-plus-year tradition, distills the artistic essence of Iowa’s heartland.

Not far away, in Davenport, the Bix Jazz Festival on July 31 through August 2 commemorates the life of Bix Beiderbecke, the Quad Cities-native jazz great. It’s three days of live jazz performances by some of the best jazz bands, attracting fans to venues throughout the city. Food vendors and an active street fair also inject a little local character into the music.

Hinterland Music Festival, held Aug. 1-3 in St. Charles, Iowa, brings headliners to a picturesque outdoor landscape. The 2025 lineup features Tyler, The Creator, Kacey Musgraves, and Lana Del Rey, alongside up-and-coming artists such as Clairo and Bleachers, aimed at attracting a younger crowd. Visitors can, of course, extend the festivities by exploring other local entertainment options. Still, those who are specifically there for the music and don’t feel like exploring the city’s hidden gems and staying inside, Stake’s casino offer provides a plethora of free social games and generous bonuses for the newly registered. But with food vendors, art installations, and campgrounds, the festival delivers a whole weekend of music and camaraderie by itself.

In Illinois, there’s the Ravinia Festival in Highland Park, which takes place all summer and is a must-attend for music lovers. The historic outdoor pavilion, the oldest in North America, presents a range of acts, notably the Oasis reunion tour Aug. 28 at Soldier Field.

Ravinia’s Breaking Barriers Festival, led by conductor Marin Alsop, honors women in music with performances and food pairings, making for a special cultural experience.

Iowa Irish Fest, Waterloo, August 1-3, is a mix of cultural heritage and music. Traditional Irish music is performed by live bands to complement dance performances and Gaelic sport demonstrations. Irish food, language lessons, and a family-friendly environment make this an excellent choice for those seeking an international flair in the Midwest.

The John Deere Classic, a PGA Tour

Sports Entertainment

Quad Cities’ sports calendar sparkles during the summer of 2025 with competitions that showcase athleticism and community pride.

The Quad-City Times Bix 7, scheduled for July 26 in Davenport, is a 7-mile international road race that draws runners from across the nation. Its Mississippi River course is challenging because of the hilly terrain, but a festival featuring live music and food makes the whole thrill even more intense. The Bix 7 features a junior race and a fast 2-mile run, so all ages and abilities are invited.

In Illinois, the Research Park Softball League in Champaign begins in June and gives a glimpse of sports culture in the region. Area companies are represented by teams in an informal, community setting where games are spectator-friendly at fields surrounding the University of Illinois campus. It’s a great way to experience the region’s college spirit.

The John Deere Classic, a PGA Tour event held July 3-6 in Silvis, Illinois, attracts golf enthusiasts to the TPC Deere Run golf course. Leading golfers play for a position in the FedExCup, and the festive nature of the tournament features food vendors and activities for families. Its proximity to the Quad Cities ensures that it is a summer necessity, combining professional sports with community pride.

Cyclists will be able to enjoy the Great River Tug Fest, August 7-9 in Port Byron, Illinois, and LeClaire, Iowa, which pairs sports with offbeat riverfront fun.

In addition to a tug-of-war across the Mississippi, there’s bike racing and fun runs, along with live music and food vendors providing a party atmosphere. The bi-state event commemorates the region’s natural beauty and competitive spirit.

These events, from musical festivals to sports events, make the Quad Cities a thrilling destination to explore in summer 2025. The region’s mix of history and modern entertainment promises a memorable experience for tourists exploring Iowa and Illinois.
