Western Illinois University Students Honored for Volunteerism

Three Western Illinois University students recently received the U.S. President’s Volunteer Service Award for their work with the Cass-Putman Rescue Squad. Sophomores Elizabeth Markley, a political science major from Smithfield, received the silver award, and Bradley Mercer, a geographic information systems major and Taylor Lester, a fire protection services major, both from Cuba, received the gold award. Western Illinois University Foundation Summer Stipend Award Recipients Named

MACOMB/MOLINE, IL — The Western Illinois University Foundation and the Office of Sponsored Projects have awarded 12 stipends to WIU faculty for Summer 2022. “The WIU Foundation is proud to support our University faculty’s scholarly activity,” said Brad Bainter, executive officer of the WIU Foundation. “Since 1989, the Foundation has provided Summer Stipend Awards so faculty have the opportunity to engage in projects beyond those traditionally pursued during the academic year.” The grants, which total nearly $40,000, provide opportunities for faculty to engage... Read More

The McDonough County Health Department, in cooperation with Western Illinois University, will host a COVID-19 vaccination clinics (including boosters) for WIU faculty, staff and students, as well as members of the general public, in December as the Fall 2021 semester comes to a close. The clinic will be held in the University Union Sandburg Lounge from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 7. Johnson & Johnson, Moderna and Pfizer vaccines will be available at no cost. It’s a place where memories live on. In June 2021, the new Gwendolyn Brooks Memorial Parks was dedicated following a successful fundraising campaign. The park, located on the corner of Adams and Normal streets on the WIU-Macomb campus, is on the site of the former Gwendolyn Brooks Cultural Center (GBCC), originally called the Black Cultural Center (BCC), and on the ancestral lands of the Illinois (Inoca) indigenous people. It was 115 years ago, on Dec. 4, 1906, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. was founded at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, by seven young men known as “The Jewels.” Sixty-four years later, the Eta Eta Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. was chartered at Western Illinois University. WIU’s storied fraternity charter recently celebrated its 50th anniversary. Western Illinois University Administrative Information Management Systems (AIMS) University Applications Manager Jeff Eck has been named the Al and Elaine Goldfarb Civil Service Employee of the Month for November 2021. Eck began working in AIMS at WIU in October 2012 as a Computer Programmer II. He was then reallocated by audit in August 2013 to Applications Programmer I. Western Illinois University has not decided whether to require vaccinations on campus.

MACOMB/MOLINE, IL — The Western Illinois University Counseling Center (UCC) has been re-accredited by the International Accreditation of Counseling Services (IACS), Inc., the premier leader in setting the benchmark for the full range of professional counseling services on college and university campuses.
