Amy Hessel's Lifetime In Sports Reflects In Her Work At Muscatine YMCA

Amy Hessel grew up in an athletic family where the fires of sport, camaraderie and competition forged lifelong bonds, and she still helps create those relationships as the character development coordinator for the Muscatine YMCA. New Virtual Concerts From Muscatine Offer Comfort and Healing

Juan Carlos Mendoza has sung in some pretty prestigious places – including New York City’s Juilliard School, and the Lyric Opera and Grant Park Music Festival in Chicago. But recording two recent recitals at the Muscatine Art Center may be among the most meaningful so far in the young tenor’s career. Mendoza, a Mexican-American 34-year-old, is a Muscatine native and last month he filmed two solo programs in the 1921 music room in the Muscatine mansion at 1314 Mulberry Ave., as a partnership with Moline-based Living Proof Exhibit (LPE). It's No Mystery Why Clemens Slays It As A Best-Selling Author

It was a cold and stormy day. We met at Elly’s. Little coffee joint down by the river. My associate and I walked in, took a look around. Waitress smiled her way over. “Hi. What can I get you?” “Nothing right now, doll, thanks,” I said. “I got business.” He was waiting at a corner table. Back to the hard brick wall, mafia style, eyes on the door, like a guy who doesn’t want to get hit without a chance to go down with some cold steel in his mitts. He wore dark shades. Dark shirt. Drank coffee black as the devil’s heart. Gave us a nod. Yeah. He was the guy we were there to meet. The... Read More
