Documentary on American Nazi Resistance Coming to German American Heritage Center

The harrowing story of the only American woman to be executed by direct orders of Adolf Hitler will return to Davenport’s German American Heritage Center this Saturday. The 2011 documentary “Wisconsin’s Nazi Resistance: The Mildred Fish Harnack Story,” will be shown at 2 p.m. at the center, at 2nd and Gaines streets. The one-hour doc takes a provocative look at a Milwaukee-born, University of Wisconsin-Madison graduate who became the only American woman ever executed on the direct order of Hitler for her involvement in the Berlin resistance movement during World War II. DAVENPORT — Like many other Quad-Cities events impacted this year by Covid-19, the German American Heritage Center in Davenport will hold its third-annual Best of the Wurst Sausage Competition virtually next month. Out of an abundance of caution, this year’s Best of the Wurst will be a special, socially distanced event, rather than the usual in-person festival. German American Heritage Center To Reopen June 23

After being closed since mid-March, Davenport’s German American Heritage Center will reopen with specific health and safety conditions on Tuesday, June 23. The museum at 2nd and Gaines streets, will offer ticketed and timed visits to groups of less than six, every 45 minutes during normal hours – which start at 10 a.m. Tuesday to Saturday, and noon on Sunday. The center will have new cleaning procedures, social distancing, sanitization areas, and mask requirements for all at the front desk, executive director Kelly Lao said recently. Join the German American Heritage Center on Sunday, May 31st at 2pm for “The White Rose,” a virtual program presented by Olivia Covert, Development, Volunteer, and Education Coordinator at the GAHC. The White Rose was a non-violent student resistance group in the Third Reich. Following Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds’ lifting of restrictions for public openings this week, the Figge Art Museum (225 W. 2nd S., Davenport) will reopen to the public on Tuesday, June 9 and to members-only on Saturday and Sunday, June 6 and 7. Admission will be free in an effort to create a no-touch visitor experience and visitors will be required to reserve a time slot prior to their visit.
