“All Is Calm” Now Playing at Moline’s Black Box Theatre

The Black Box Theatre is presenting a truly unique theatrical experience with “All Is Calm!” It’s World War 1. Christmas Eve, 1914. Out of the violence a silence, then a song. A German soldier steps into No Man’s Land singing “Stille Nacht.” Thus begins an extraordinary night of camaraderie, music, peace. A remarkable true story, told in the words and songs of the men who lived it. “All Is Calm” is now playing in Downtown Moline and runs through December 17 with performances on Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 7:30pm and Sunday at 2:00pm. Is The New 'Pet Sematary' The Cat's Meow, Or Ghostly Dog Doo?

As big names in horror go, you can’t get much bigger than Stephen King, and this year saw the release of a new film version of his classic “Pet Sematary,” which is now available on video and streaming for your viewing pleasure as Halloween quickly approaches. So what’s the verdict on the new flick? I reviewed it earlier this year, and here’s my take. In the 1989 original  film“Pet Sematary” pets buried in a spooky backwoods cemetery come back to life. When a tragedy befalls a child of Louis and Rachel Creed (Jason Clarke and Amy Seimetz), the lure of having... Read More

Dissecting One Of The Best Horror Films of 2019: Jordan Peele's 'Us'

One of the most controversial and most talked about horror films of this year or any recent year has been Jordan Peele’s critically-acclaimed “Us,” which is now available on video and streaming services. I saw “Us” in Austin, at South By Southwest, where it premiered in March, and I’m still letting my thoughts on “Us” and its meaning percolate. Here are 10 possible explanations for plot points in “Us.” WARNING: SPOILERS IF YOU HAVEN’T SEEN THE FILM. It has been pointed out by someone other than me that “Us” is, basically, “U.S.”, i.e. United States. There... Read More

Get A Tap On Halloween Fun With 'Zombieland: Double Tap' Out Now

“Zombieland: Double Tap” opens today in theaters. Right from the opening credits, you know you’re in for more  irreverent humor a la 2009’s “Zombieland”. It starts with the Columbia lady on her pedestal using the torch to beat down two zombies attacking her. There is also a voice-over from Jesse Eisenberg, thanking audiences for choosing this form of zombie viewing from all those available. The bar is set low enough in this sequel, as one critic put it, to step over it handily. This is a continuation of the fearsome foursome that roamed the Apocalyptic land in 2009, with Woody Harrelson... Read More

Local Horror Writers Meet! Wilson Talks To Beck And Woods

In March 2018, local filmmakers Scott Beck and Bryan Woods were still relatively unknown, although that was about to change. The duo, who grew up in Bettendorf and currently reside in Los Angeles, were about to skyrocket to stardom with a little film they’d written called “A Quiet Place.”   Beck and Woods have since made another film, “Haunt,” which is available on DVD and streaming services, and have a number of other projects in the works.   However, before that all happened, the duo were happy to sit down for an interview with me at the South By Southwest Festival.... Read More
