Yesterday we witnessed an event that was unlike anything we’ve seen before when insurgents breached our nation’s Capitol building. I am saddened and upset at what I saw. Threats to our democracy affect each one of us, no matter where we live, work, and learn. Today, I call on members of our Leatherneck family, regardless of your political beliefs, to join together to begin healing the divide.

Western Illinois University President Guiyou Huang Addresses Violence In Nation's CapitolAs we move toward Inauguration Day, I ask that our University community find common ground and work together to move not only WIU forward, but also our nation. As an institution of higher education, we have a responsibility to uphold the tenets of democracy, engage in civil and peaceful discourse and discussion, and educate the next generation of leaders.

Hate, racism, threats, and violence have no place at our University, in our community, and in our society. We remain committed to ensuring that our University remains just, safe, and forward thinking.

WIU students, you are the future. Take what you learn here and use your education for the common good. You can make a difference.

Thank you,

Guiyou Huang
President
