July 16th, 2017

The Java Journey goes back to Moline. I hesitate to admit at first.. I couldn’t find the place very easily . Well I would have asked directions… wait a minute isn’t that a man’s line? haha. (But I digress ) Dead Poets Expresso LTD 1525 32nd Avenue A Moline. “Et tu Brutus?” Being a poetry lover myself, Sir William Shakespeare, Edgar Allan Poe being  two of my most favorite I had to include Dead Poets espresso LTD (not to be confused with Dead Poets Society that was a good movie however.) After I had finished driving in circles yes about 3 times (stop laughing),... Read More

Today the Java Journey takes us to Iowa. Nestled inside the Green Thumbers flower shop on Brady Street, is a lovely place where you can have a coffee and enjoy the sight and smell of true natural beauty. The coffee shop has been a part of the beautiful floral Nursery for  slightly over a year. But in that one year Aroma Coffee has gained quite a following. Not just those with green thumbs( that right there leaves me out) stop in.  But people driving up Brady Street and( we know how busy Brady Street gets.) Many business people and they have quite a group of Palmer students come in for a coffee... Read More

Cool Beanz Is Cool Beans!

May 14th, 2017

The next stop on our Java Journey is a very cool little coffee shop called  Cool Beanz. “Many changes have been made since our opening in August of 2009,” says owner operator Annette of her shop located in the hilltop area of Rock Island on the corner of 14th Avenue and 30th Street. She goes on to tell me Cool Beanz actually got its name from her father. “Back in the seventies the word cool beans was a very popular slang expression not unlike far out groovy,” she said. “That’s a perfect name for a coffee shop. When Hunting For Great Coffee, Set Your Sites On Caribou

April 23rd, 2017

Put down that newspaper grab a Cup a Joe and follow my series, the Java Journey. Our latest stop is Caribou Coffee, located at the John Deere Road and 7th Street Moline HyVee. I walked up to this little coffee stand and asked for a decaf mocha with dark chocolate chips. It was delicious! It  tasted like homemade! Caribou coffee, located inside the Moline HyVee, which is usually bustling with customers, is a cozy  little nook with a comfy leather couch and plenty of seating in a little enclave. I learned it was a whole separate world from the store itself. As I spoke with Kathy, the bubbly friendly... Read More

January 25th, 2017

As we begin this new year, many of us make resolutions to make healthier choices, and this includes eating better. There are few things in this life that we have control over, the food that we use to fuel and energize ourselves is one of those things. We all know this and, yet, this country as a whole still consistently overeats and eats things that are not good for our bodies. I’ve been working very hard to change this for myself, at home, and am now choosing to frequent establishments that support me in this goal. Below are my top 5 favorite places to eat a healthy meal in the Quad Cities.... Read More

RAW Brings Fresh Tastes To Downtown Davenport

January 3rd, 2017

Twice now I have had the pleasure of visiting RAW, a new cocktail lounge located at 136 East 3rd Street in Downtown Davenport. Upon my second visit I was lucky enough to ask one of the owners, Sid Rognoni, a few questions about the establishment. Rognoni and the other owner, Chris Odendahl, co-own Bowls Urban Eats, the restaurant just up the block. They had their eye on the space for awhile, wanting to open a high-end bar. The place has been beautifully renovated, giving it a “big city” feel. RAW is serving up seasonal, fresh food and drinks using some local, all interesting ingredients. So... Read More

Taste Buds’ Delicious Smoothie Is A Green Machine

October 27th, 2016

Rising from the roots of the old Mad Roots Juicery, Taste Buds in downtown Rock Island, 150 16 ½ St., is offering similar fare, but with its own twist. One of those familiar aspects of the menu is the smoothie and juice bar, which features a variety of concoctions for the health-conscious and those looking for a delicious and nutritious treat. I ventured down to Taste Buds last week to check out its menu and have one of the aforementioned smoothies. Now, whenever you see a story like this, invariably the reporter ends up getting one of the craziest combinations on the menu. You don’t see the... Read More
