Two candidates for director of the Western Illinois University Union will interview on campus Thursday-Friday, June 3-4 and Tuesday-Wednesday, June 8-9. Candidates include Ashley Katz, interim director of the University Union at WIU, June 3-4, and Brent Freeman, senior associate director of Nebraska Unions at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, June 8-9. Virtual open sessions for faculty, staff and students will be held with each candidate from 1:15-2 p.m. June 4 (Katz) and from 1:45-2:30 p.m. June 9 (Freeman). World Environmental Day is coming up, and Western Illinois University will mark it with a special lecture series. The new Gwendolyn Brooks Memorial Park Dedication will take place on the Western Illinois University Macomb campus beginning at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 12. The Park is located on the corner of Adams and Normal streets on the WIU-Macomb campus, on the site of the former Gwendolyn Brooks Cultural Center (GBCC). Graduate students at Western Illinois University have been given the unique opportunity to reach out to a community in Honduras, even in the age of COVID-19. Graduate students in WIU’s Health Sciences program have been working alongside a Honduran community as public health consultants. MACOMB/MOLINE/FREEPORT, IL – Western Illinois University and Highland Community College (HCC) in Freeport recently signed an agreement to create an education pathway from high school through college for HCC students to complete a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education with WIU. The agreement provides the opportunity for Freeport-area students to begin the Elementary Education Pathway at high schools via dual credit, complete an Associate of Arts Degree at Highland and then complete the Bachelor of Education in Elementary Education from WIU on Highland’s campus. McMeekan Named Western Illinois University Employee of the Month

Western Illinois University Office of Public Safety Information Technology Technical Associate Peter McMeekan has been named the Al and Elaine Goldfarb Civil Service Employee of the Month for May. McMeekan began working at WIU, and in the Office of Public Safety, as a microcomputer support specialist II in September 1997. He was reclassified by audit to microcomputer support specialist III in May 1999. McMeekan audited to procedures and systems analyst II in March 2003 and to procedures and systems analyst III in October 2006. He moved to his current position in January 2017.
