Who Will Win? Oscars Include Nom For Q-C Filmmakers Beck And Woods

Who Will Win? Oscars Include Nom For Q-C Filmmakers Beck And Woods

“A Quiet Place,” written by Quad-Citians Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, was nominated in the sound editing category for the 91st Academy Awards, which announced their noms this morning. Unfortunately, despite a Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice Award nom, Beck and Woods weren’t nominated in the Best Original Screenplay category, and “Place” lead Emily Blunt was snubbed for an actress pick despite some buzz. The biggest surprises among the nominees were “Black Panther,” which became the first Marvel film to be nominated for Best Picture, although it was certainly deserved. In addition... Read More

Gillette Commercial Cuts Deeply

Gillette Commercial Cuts Deeply

It’s ironic that most of the commercials throughout Gillette’s history have involved a man literally looking at himself in the mirror, since its latest and most controversial ad does so metaphorically in a way far more powerful than the previous banal stock image to shill razors. I’m sure most of you have heard about it by now, and a large percentage of you have seen it. (If you haven’t, you can watch it here.) In the ad, various scenarios of traditional rites of masculine passage and behavior play out, juxtaposed with the questioning of those tropes in today’s world. We see a boy being... Read More

NFL Draft Coming To Rock Island!

The NFL is returning to Rock Island! Ok, well, not a team, but the draft. Sorry! Anyway, according to officials with the parks and recreation department for the city, Round 6 of the NFL draft will be held at Augustana College on April 27. Former Augustana College and NFL quarterback Ken Anderson is also said to be involved with the proceedings. Why Rock Island? One of the founding teams of the NFL in 1920, the Rock Island Independents played their games at Douglas Park. In fact, a game at Douglas Park on Sept. 26, 1920 is recognized by some NFL scholars as the first game in the history of the league.... Read More

THE BEST MUSIC OF 2018!!!

It’s that time of the year again. Time for critics to line up to roll out their “Best of…” lists. And whether it’s TV, movies or music, they all seem to follow a distinct pattern. I’ve done these lists for years, and it wasn’t until the last few calendar turns that I stepped back from doing them, basically because I got bored with it. Until this year. This year, I’m stepping back into the fray, to deliver a list of THE BEST MUSIC OF THE YEAR. THE BEST!!! And here it is, THE BEST MUSIC OF 2018!!! 10.) album recorded by a hygiene-challenged, agoraphobic shut-in that sounds like The... Read More
