At its annual meeting Monday, the Downtown Bettendorf Organization (DBO) celebrated the fiscal year 2021 successes of the Downtown Bettendorf Self-Supported Municipal Improvement District (SSMID) and outlined downtown highlights expected in the coming year. “Downtown has turned the corner, our roads are realigned, the new Interstate 74 Bridge is coming to completion and the urban park’s construction is going to start in the fall,” DBO Executive Director Ryan Jantzi said. “That is creating more energy downtown and people are realizing this is real. The Downtown Bettendorf Organization (DBO) will once again present its “Be Downtown” event from 9:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday, June 5, in downtown Bettendorf. Located in the city’s parking lot at 15th and State streets, this free, family-friendly event will feature multiple bags tournaments with cash prizes, live outdoor music, food and drink vendors, children’s activities and more. Patrons are encouraged to bring a lawn chair. The day kicks off at 9:30 a.m. with 1031 Fitness presenting a free 45-minute high-intensity training (HIT) workout. Following the meticulous, painstaking preservation of a former one-room school in Bettendorf — completed in September 2019, after more than seven years — the project supporters envisioned reopening as a museum in early 2020. Then Covid happened. The 1873 Forest Grove No. 5 School – refurbished to its 1920s appearance at a cost of $250,000 — is scheduled to reopen on Saturday, May 22, from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Regular hours beyond Saturday mornings will be expanded as docents become trained. The Bereskin Gallery and Art Academy, 2967 State St., Bettendorf, will highlight the multimedia artworks of Davenport artist Steve Banks in March and April. An opening reception with Banks will be held Friday, March 5 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Banks’ new exhibit. “Construct/Destruct,” emphasizes the architectural underpinnings in his artwork, which includes several ceramic sculptures.
