EMSSC Spartans Raise Almost $1,000!

Thanks to the generosity of managers Jerad Welter of HyVee Moline on 7th Street and John Deere Road, and Alex McGehee of Anchor Lumber in East Moline, the EMSSC Spartans 08 team, ranked #15 in Illinois, was able to raise almost $1,000 in a bake sale at both spots last weekend. The money raised will help pay for tournament costs and uniform costs for the team! Bent River’s Raspberry Brings Summer To Fruition

Bent River’s Raspberry Brings Summer To Fruition

Well, from the looks of things, between the stifling humidity, the oppressive sun between monsoons, and the constant harassment of gnats as persistent and unwelcome as guys hitting on newly single women on social media, summer seems to have finally kayaked into the Quad-Cities. And with that new season comes a desperate need for a beverage, known to those over 21 (and ONLY those over 21, of course) as “a beer,” to satisfy the full summer cravings of escape, levity and the blessed sainthood of responsible inebriation. Local brew pubs have, generously, proven up to this crucial task on the annual.... Read More

As Game of Thrones Ends, Who Will Finally Sit On The Iron Throne?

You might have heard just a little bit about a show called “Game of Thrones” on your social media. Maybe. And, if so, you might be aware that this coming weekend is the series finale. Yup, at long last, fans will get to see who will finally sit on the iron throne, and internet commentators will get to write long article bitching about it and crabbing about how horrible this season has been. That seems to be the general consensus, that this season has been nothing but a crashing disappointment. I can’t say I agree. I do agree that they should’ve stretched it out for more episodes to allow... Read More

It's A Johns And Davids World

It’s an odd trend in entertainment and pop culture, but strangely, there are a lot of creative, imaginative and cool creators named John and David. Think about it. Think of all the popular and/or pop culturally influential Johns. John Lennon. John Lydon (aka Johnny Rotten). John Belushi. John Cusack. Johnny Depp. John Steinbeck. John Hiatt. John Waters. Johnny Carson. John Mayer. John Grisham. John Fogerty. John Legend. John Mellencamp. Etc. Etc. And then there are the many Davids: David Letterman. Dave Chappelle. Dave Barry. David Mamet. David Lynch. David Fincher. David Byrne. David Sedaris. David... Read More

DJ Shane Brown back at 2nd Ave!

For one night only, DJ Shane Brown was back at the club he helped to make famous, 2nd Ave in downtown Rock Island, spinning new dance tracks and a few classics mixed in. Shane is normally at the McClellan Stockade in the Village of East Davenport, but he couldn’t resist the invitation to come back to the Ave to spin, and the packed dance floor was likewise happy to see the veteran DJ back on the tables!    Read More

It’s National Siblings Day!

Ah… National Siblings Day. The day that comes once a year when brothers and sisters all over put aside their differences and acknowledge each other through thoughts, words and pictures. Mothers and Fathers have had their days of recognition for a long time. So why not round out the appreciation holidays by including those individuals who shared so many childhood memories with you? National Siblings Day was founded by native New Yorker Claudia Evart in 1995, to honor and celebrate siblings.  After losing her two siblings early in life in separate accidents, she knew how important siblings could... Read More

Let’s Stop Fishing For Reasons To Hate On Catfish Guy

Let’s Stop Fishing For Reasons To Hate On Catfish Guy

“How can you be making a celebrity out of a criminal!” “He broke the law! How can he be a hero?” “You should be ashamed of yourselves for giving fame to a law-breaker!” These are some of the messages I’ve gotten this week from, well, all of three people. And no, they’re not about Batman. Those have finally died down, especially after he helped stop the Joker from blowing up the Rock Island County Courthouse. Or at least got a temporary injunction. Rather, the flood of Batman emails has subsided in lieu of those complaints about Catfish Guy. Yes, QC Catfish Guy. A.k.a. Pete Robinson. A.k.a.... Read More
