REVIEW: Cooks And Cuffs Will Capture Your Attention And Appetite, Doc Says

In 1888 Vincent Van Gogh painted quite possibly my favorite work of art. Cafe De Terrace. It was part one in a series of three. Fast forward to 2021, and Chef Keys from Cooks and Cuffs has cooked for me her Cafe De Keys. This New York born and raised Chef found her way here, to our bustling little metropolitan area, looking to start a new life with her husband. What’s she brought with her is a style of cooking all her own. To call what Chef Keys does in the kitchen is cook, is an insult. If Pavarotti hummed a diddy next to you, would you call it humming or listening to a musical master?... Read More

BREAKING: Iowa Governor And Supreme Court Clash Over Masks, Will New Restrictions Hit Iowa?

BREAKING NEWS: As the covid-19 delta variant rips through Iowa, a fierce battle is raging between Gov. Kim Reynolds and the Iowa Supreme Court over mask mandates and further mitigations. On Friday, the chief justice of the Iowa Supreme Court, Susan Christensen, whom Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds appointed in 2018, signed an order making masks mandatory in public areas controlled by the court ruling — regardless of vaccination status —  clashing with Reynolds’ state law banning mask mandates in public schools and other public areas. Christensen based her order on recommendations... Read More

Here Comes The Son – JT and JT, Jr. Bond Over Music During Pandemic

Saturday in the Arts is a weekly feature covering a trend, subject, event or personality of local interest. It runs every Saturday morning on your site for the best entertainment and arts coverage in the area, QuadCities.com! Josh Turner is the name of a successful, 43-year-old country artist. More importantly to me and my family, Josh Turner is the name of my younger son, a 21-year-old extraordinary musical artist in his own right. Though I have long known Josh to be a multi-talented musician, the depth and meaning of his sweeping, varied, dazzling artistry didn’t become clear or as important... Read More

OPINION: Rock Island Should NOT Sell Its Water And Sewer, And Its Leadership Needs To Stop Entertaining It

UPDATED: After a lengthy question and answer session with American Water, I still think Rock Island selling its water and sewer would be a horrible idea, and I think the Rock Island mayor and city council needs to stop being disingenuous about stringing the idea along and put it aside. After I’d previously written on the subject, I was happy to hear from Karen Cotton, Senior Manager, External Communications, for Illinois American Water. I understand it takes a good amount of courage and initiative to contact someone who has expressed a contrary idea, particularly one going against a goal... Read More

Davenport Artist Drawn to Animation, Fundraising for New Project

Saturday in the Arts is a weekly feature covering a trend, subject, event or personality of local interest. It runs every Saturday morning on your site for the best entertainment and arts coverage in the area, QuadCities.com! Normally, calling someone a “chicken” is an insult. For artist Michael Cook of Davenport, he created Chucky Chicken as an unlikely hero, who triumphs with pluck, humor and a big heart – traits he sees in himself. A friendly 33-year-old native of the Chicago suburb Oswego, Ill., the gifted animator cooked up Chucky in 2008, when Cook was attending the Illinois Institute... Read More
