On Monday, January 17, the 39th Annual Memorial Service and Awards Celebration were held virtually. The celebration is held every year to honor the late Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Rock Island High School senior Jaylin Randle was awarded the M.L. Lockhart Scholarship. Rock Island High School senior Joshua Briggs won the Black Hawk College Commitment to Diversity Scholarship. The Child Abuse Council is bringing new mental health and medical services to children and families in Muscatine and the surrounding southeast Iowa counties through its Mississippi Valley Child Protection Center. The program is part of a nation-wide network of child advocacy centers that provide services to mitigate the immediate and long-term negative impacts of child abuse and neglect on children, families, and their communities. The Christmas tradition of “Julotta” returns at Bishop Hill State Historic Site. All are welcome to attend a nondenominational church service at 6 a.m. Christmas Day, Saturday, Dec. 25 in the Colony Church. The word Julotta comes from the Swedish words for “yule” and “before dawn.” Christmas morning in Sweden begins with attendance at the Julotta service.
