Western Illinois University Broadcasting Student Wins Walter Cronkite Scholarship for Second Year

MACOMB, IL – For the second time in two years, Western Illinois University senior broadcasting major Devin Brooks has been one of five national winners awarded the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) Mid-America EMMY Foundation Walter Cronkite Scholarship.

Brooks, of St. Louis, MO, is a student anchor, reporter, executive producer and web producer for NEWS3, the student-produced newscast in the WIU Department of Broadcasting and Journalism He is pursuing an emphasis in news and performance, and is minoring in sociology.

This summer, Brooks completed his third summer internship at WREX-TV in Rockford, IL.

“I am once again truly grateful and honored the NATAS organization offers this prestigious scholarship for students to offset the costs of tuition and remember the high respect for Walter Cronkite,” said Brooks. “This award goes to show that great things come with hard work. I thought it would be hard to find scholarships before coming to college, but my teachers at WIU have helped open doors of opportunity I least expected and I’m appreciative of their time to make sure students have a rewarding college experience.”

In addition to the scholarship award, Brooks also won honorable mention awards in the NATAS Mid-America Student Television Awards in the categories of “General Assignment – Serious News” and “General Assignment – Light News.”

The Walter Cronkite Scholarship is merit-based and is given to students who demonstrate the potential to join the broadcasting profession and contribute to its future. The Mid-America regional includes Illinois, from Champaign to Urbana and south to Paducah, KY, and all of Missouri and Arkansas, as well as Shreveport, LA.

Brooks will be recognized during a ceremony this fall.
