The second Rock Island Public Library/Augustana College Frieze Lecture, Tip of the Iceberg: Understanding the Bigger Picture of Pandemic Disease Severity with Dr. Rebecca Heick has been rescheduled to Thursday, November 5 at 2:00 pm via Zoom.

Though the rising toll of COVID deaths is a major focus of concern and intervention, Dr. Heick’s remarks will note that mortality is just the tip of the iceberg. Less severe, but perhaps long-lasting, disease and after-effects of infection are much more common. As an assistant professor of public health at Augustana, Heick will consider the bigger prevention picture of pandemic disease in her lecture.

Second Rock Island Public Library, Augustana College Frieze Lecture Rescheduled to Thursday, November 5The 2020 Lecture series is taking a deeper look at public reaction to global pandemics, past and present. The previous lecture, on the reaction to the 1918 flu, is available as a Zoom video recording at the Rock Island Public Library and Augustana College YouTube channels.  All Frieze presentations are free to the public, and offer a way for participants to expand their understanding of a topic by bringing the resources of Augustana College into the public “square.”

The Frieze Lectures, originally created in 1998 by board member Evelyn Katz to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the Rock Island Public Library’s founding, have continued on as a 23-year partnership with Augustana College. The series is named for the architectural frieze which wraps around the Downtown Library building. The stories of the 19th Century writers and poets engraved there were the subject of the first lecture series in 1998.

The Zoom webinar invitation will be sent by registered participants via email, and is also available via Library and Augustana websites and Facebook events.
