On Monday, January 17, the 39th Annual Memorial Service and Awards Celebration were held virtually.

The celebration is held every year to honor the late Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Rock Island High School senior Jaylin Randle was awarded the M.L. Lockhart Scholarship.

Rock Island High School senior Joshua Briggs won the Black Hawk College Commitment to Diversity Scholarship. He was awarded for his commitment to diversity, to culture, and his commitment to excellence.

Rock Island Center for Math & Science 6th-grader Chelsie Thomas won the Youth Expression Contest. Chelsie got to share her poem at the virtual ceremony. This year’s theme was “A Conscientious Stance.” You can read her essay here>>

Retired RIMSD#41 employee and volunteer for the district Bonnie Ballard won the “I Have a Dream Award”. The award is given to an individual for exceptional community service.

Sean Leary is an author, director, artist, musician, producer and entrepreneur who has been writing professionally since debuting at age 11 in the pages of the Comics Buyers Guide. An honors graduate of the University of Southern California masters program, he has written over 50 books including the best-sellers The Arimathean, Every Number is Lucky to Someone and We Are All Characters.
