Basketball Is Back At The TaxSlayer!
Nearly a year after the basketball tournament scheduled for the TaxSlayer Center was canceled, the riverfront arena in Moline is scheduled to again host the Missouri Valley Conference Women’s Championship again through March 14. It will be the first TaxSlayer Center event in the main arena since the canceled tournament.

have activity in the building after such a long time.’’
The TaxSlayer Center wasn’t actually dark or gathering dust. There was a flurry of activity even without scheduled events. Spectators didn’t see activities, but will see the results as the venue reopens.
In the past year, the venue has undergone numerous renovation projects. Fan-friendly innovations including a new WIFI system and convenient changes in concessions, including mobile ordering and cashless concessions. The suites and conference center were renovated. Virus-killing ultraviolet lights have been installed on the escalator handrails and touchless flush and sink valves have been installed in the restrooms.
In order to reopen safely, there is an extensive plan under consideration for the basketball tournament. Elements of the plan, still to be finalized, include:
- Mandatory mask wearing except when consuming food or beverages in your designated seat
- Pre-ticketed seating pods of 2, 3 or 4 ticketholders; no food or drink consumption on the concourse
- Temperature checks of staff entering the building
- No consumption of food or beverage in the concourse
- Frequent disinfecting of all surfaces, including seats and rails
- Clear barriers/sneeze guards at all concession points of sales
- All players, coaches, athletic department staff, event staff and volunteers will be tested for COVID-19 daily by Genesis Occupational Health
The TaxSlayer Center is coming back as a regional destination for sports and entertainment with a new look, new features and a safety plan to keep spectators, employees and visitors safe.

Maintaining our mental health is as important as taking care of our physical health; this has perhaps never been more true than it has been during the pandemic. Writing, specifically journal writing, is one way to nurture your mental health while expressing yourself. To learn how start a journaling practice, get a refresher, or simply enjoy more practice, join Christina Wassenhove, Jodie Toohey, and Ryan Collins for a free virtual “Journaling for Mental Health” workshop on Monday, March 15th, at 6:30 p.m. via Zoom, presented by Nami and the Midwest Writing Center.
Jodie Toohey, author and publisher, will serve as moderator and provide some tips for scheduling a regular writing practice and developing a healthy journal writing mindset. Christina Wassenhove, a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and NAMI volunteer, will talk about mental health, why it’s important, and how journaling can be a part of achieving and maintaining mental health. Ryan Collins, teaching artist and MWC Executive Director, will lead participants through journal writing exercises.
There is a $10 suggested donation to attend the workshop. The workshop is free and open to the public. All donations will be split 50/50 between NAMI and the Midwest Writing Center.
WQPT Holding Hemingway Events
WQPT presents a variety of outreach activities in conjunction with the new Ken Burns documentary Hemingway. Directed by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick, Hemingway examines the visionary work and turbulent life of Ernest Hemingway, one of the most influential writers America has ever produced. Interweaving his eventful biography with excerpts from his writing, we will see beyond the façade of the public image, becoming intimately familiar with this brilliant, ambitious, charismatic, and egocentric man.

These conversations feature the filmmakers and special guests as they explore the writer’s art and legacy. The hour-long discussions feature clips from the upcoming three-part series.

Local outreach, which includes Hemingway at the Drive-In, A Cuban Inspired Meal with a Side of Hemingway, a Hemingway-themed Trivia Night, and a discussion with Hemingway biographer, Mary V. Dearborn are scheduled in March and April. The documentary will air on WQPT in April.
