Camp Dodge: Home Away from Home

Sunday, August 6 @ 2pm

 

Utilizing period documents and photographs, “Camp Dodge: Home Away from Home” illustrates the rapid transformation and federalization of the Iowa National Guard base northwest of Des Moines into the largest military base in Iowa history. During World War I Camp Dodge evolved into a divisional sized training cantonment for the 88th Infantry Division occupying an area of eight square miles. By the end of the war in November 1918 Camp Dodge processed over 100,000 draftees into US Army service.

 

Second Saturdays at the GAHC!

Come join us on the Second Saturday of each month for fun, German-inspired activities from 1-2pm.

 

All children and college students with a student ID get free admission to the museum all day!

 

Come by the Center on August 12 at 1pm to make Schultütes (School Cones), a German back-to-school tradition!

The Baader Meinhoff Complex is a look at Germany’s terrorist group, the Red Army Faction (RAF), which organized bombings, robberies, kidnappings and assassinations in the late 1960s and ’70s.

Enjoy the Boone Scenic Valley Railroad & Museum, the James H. Andrew Railroad Museum, the Mamie Doud Eisenhower Birthplace, a round-trip train ride to an old coal mining town in a 1920’s era coach class car, and a banquet style meal at the Ox Yoke Inn in Amana Colonies.
