Season Of Light Coming To AugustanaThe Yuletide evening sky is especially rewarding, and now you and your family have a chance to learn all about it!

The John Deere Planetarium at Augustana College is hosting a free planetarium show, “Season of Light”, starting this Saturday Dec 9 and going through Friday Dec 15.

This one-of-a-kind holiday sky demonstration will be offered weekdays at 7 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays at 2 p.m. Admission is free, but reservations are requested. For reservations, please call (309) 794-7318 during weekday business hours. The planetarium’s doors will open 15 minutes before each show. Those who arrive late will not be admitted, and it is not recommended for children 7 years and younger.

“Season of Light” is a multimedia planetarium show that uses the planetarium sky projector, astronomical images, music and narration to tell the story of how holiday traditions are connected to the sky. December is the darkest month of the year, and people all over the world hold festivals, light candles and try to bring light to the darkness of the winter sky.

Just outside the planetarium in the Getz-Rogers Gallery you can check out full-color images from the Hubble Space Telescope. A quarter-ton piece of the Canyon Diablo meteor will be displayed with interpretive information. The nearby Fryxell Geology Museum also will be open to the public, on weekdays from 7:30-8:30 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 1-4 p.m.

Come enjoy a beautiful presentation while learning about the seasons, winter constellations and about the Star of Bethlehem. The entire show will be narrated by the distinctive voice of NPR’s Noah Adams. Planetarium Director Dr. Lee Carkner will be leading each of the shows.

Come get into the holiday spirit with a bit of scientific magic!
